GOLF – GOWRAN PARK

Stunning Golf Course In Parkland Setting Only 4 Miles From The Gables and Longbowe Self-catering Holiday Homes Kilkenny.jpgAbout the Golf Course

Golf Course

In 2001 Gowran Park, in County Kilkenny, developed this unique 18 hole golf course to compliment its renowned race meetings. Incorporating a mixture of established woodland and lakes, this Jeff Howes designed par 71, 18 hole golf course provides and excellent test for the low handicap golfer whilst also being very enjoyable for the middle to high handicappers.

Gowran Park warmly welcomes:

  • Casual Green Fees
  • Societies
  • Corporate Golf Days and Groups
  • Clubs
  • Classics

The team at Gowran Park will ensure that your day out is memorable from start to finish and endeavour to look after everything with the greatest attention to detail.

Golf Course FeaturesParkland Golf In The Tranquil Surrounds OF Gowran Park Only 4 Miles From The Gables and Longbowe Self-catering Holiday Homes Kilkenny.jpg

The key feature of Gowran Park golf course would be that five holes of the golf course are located within the centre of the race course. The first three holes start inside the track, and then proceed in an anti-clockwise direction, returning inside again to play the 9th and the 18th under the watchful eye of the clubhouse. Holes 2 and 17 also face the extra challenge of avoiding the two lakes.

The course is a wonderful parkland golf course with tree-lined fairways and superb greens complemented by various water hazards, lakes and streams. The 15th hole is arguably the most picturesque hole on the course, no bunkers, no water, just a corridor of fairway cut between two rows of 100ft plus trees.

The signature hole is the 4th hole. A fantastic hole based on “Azalea” the 13th hole at Augusta. Playing to 100ft high trees in the distance you have to avoid the trees to the right and the creek to the left, expected to play your second shot over the creek which surrounds the green. A real index 2 hole.

This exciting, beautiful, dramatic and challenging golf course leads to an enjoyable golfing experience. No trip to the South East is complete without a trip to this Kilkenny Golf Course.

Fishing In Kilkenny

Fishing Available On the River Nore Which Flows Through The Farm At The Gables and Longbowe Self-catering Holiday Homes Kilkenny.jpgRiver Nore
Co. Kilkenny

The seasons for the different fish on the Barrow are as follows: The salmon season runs from February 1st to September 30th. The sea-trout season runs from February 1st to September 30th and the brown-trout season runs from March 1st to September 30th. The river nore is 87 miles long and its drainage catchment area is 977 square miles.

It rises on a sandstone base but the catchment soon turns to limestone and remains so to the sea. The countryside is one of mixed farming, with some tillage, quite a bit of pasture and dairying and some bloodstock. The river has a fairly steep gradient but the flow is checked by innumerable weirs and it is probably true to say that shallow glides are the pre-dominant feature.

Wading is quite safe and necessary in many areas for the trout fishing. The banks are lined with trees in many places. Aquatic vegetation is less than its sister rivers, the Barrow and the Suir.

The best of the salmon fishing is said to extend up as far as the the confluence of the River Dinin and the best trout fishing is upstream of Thomastown, though there is some below it too. This was once one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the country but has declined dramatically recently. It now gets very few spring salmon. The grilse run fluctuates and so too does the the autumn run. the peak of the grilse fishing is from mid June until early July and the autumn run arrives some time after mid-August. The fish can be big from 12lbs-20lbs, but the run is unpredictable. The best of the trout fishing is from early season to mid-June on the tributaries and throughout the season on the main river.

Kilkenny fishing club has extensive fishing rights on the River Nore and its tributary, the Dinin River. These waters hold salmon and brown trout. The best time for salmon on any of the stretches are from March to September, there is virtually no spring fishing. The June run of grilse is fair but not nearly as good as in the past.
